Shredding Jackson Hole: The Best Snowboarding Getaway

Jackson Hole is one of my favorite ski destinates, and it never seems to disappoint. It is one of the few resorts in the U.S. that allows me to access insane terrain while still staying within the resort boundaries. This wild terrain, combined with the immense snowfall, creates a haven for snow sports enthusiasts. Being a broke college student in Jackson Hole isn’t easy, but I have some tips.

Day 1: First Turns and Getting Settled

I arrived at Jackson Hole on a fresh Saturday morning, ready to rip. This wasn’t my first rodeo at Jackson Hole, so I had to spend less time figuring out the mountain. I took the gondola up to the upper level of the mountain and got to boarding. The snow was incredible. Deep fluffy snow with no intent of stopping, I was pretty much in heaven. I found some locals and we went big on a jump that they had previously launched.

Exploring the Slopes

After snowboarding countless perfect runs in the beautiful mountains, I was starting to get tired and hungry. I made my way to the town in the evening to check up on some of my favorite locals. I’m not a big fan of fine arts, but it’s cool to walk around Jackson Hole and see all the unique shops. I also checked into the hostel that I ended up staying in that night. This is a cost-effective way to stay in Jackson Hole during the busy ski season, especially if you are traveling solo.

Ice Skating Performance

I’m also not a big ice skating guy. I look like a baby deer trying to walk for the first time when I go ice skating. But when there is a random ice skating performance in the Jackson Hole town square, you have to go. This was a super cool performance. This performance featured kids in cowboy hats, up-and-coming ice skating stars, and professional ice skaters (I believe).

After the ice skating performance, I stayed in a hostel under a cafe in Jackson Hole. It was a super cool and clean environment with very respectful guests. I talked to a ton of random people from different countries,, which was super fun.

Day 2: The Pow Train Has Made a Stop at J-Hole

The next morning, I woke up to about 10 new inches of snow, promising an even better day ahead. I also had my friends Tristan and Malachi come up for the day. We were determined to explore every inch of Jackson Hole’s wild terrain.

15 Inches of DEEP

The snow was insane, we skied hard, beyond what our legs could handle. Spirits were high, and we were sending it. This is the type of snow where you drop all of your thoughts and responsibilities, and you go for every jump you see. The day was filled with lots of deep turns and high stoke. As the day came to an end, I said goodbye to Tristan and Malachi. I also realized that I accidentally booked a hostel in Driggs, which was about 45 minutes away from the resort. I had to bite the bullet and make the trek over the infamous Teton Pass.

Day 3: Monday Pow Slayer

On Monday, I woke up bright and early to conquer the Teton Pass to get to the resort. With 2 feet of snowfall, this was no easy task. When I finally got to the resort, I was rewarded with endless deep powder with no crowds. This was easily the best conditions of the season. I didn’t think it was possible to top the day previous, but somehow, Jackson Hole outdid itself once again. This is why I keep coming back to this wild place, over and over.

Tips for Your Jackson Hole Snowboard/Ski Trip

  • Plan Ahead: Book your accommodations and lift tickets in advance, especially during peak season. Stay in a hostel if you are traveling solo.
  • Park Smart: All of the parking on the resort is $25+; if you are with multiple people or you are rich, just eat that cost. If you’re like me (broke), you should probably park for free at Stetson Ranch, located at the base of the ski resort.
  • Get Ready to Send it: Study the trail map before and get your first tracks laid out.
  • Stay Spontaneous: Leave time to explore the town of Jackson and get to know the locals. You won’t regret it!
